2016 National Challenge
The 2016 National KidWind Challenge was hosted at the American Wind Energy Association’s annual WINDPOWER event in New Orleans, the largest wind energy conference in the U.S. After taking a year off from Nationals in 2015, we had a great turnout of excited teams from the past two years. Nearly 400 students, teachers, and parents came from all over the U.S. and even U.S. Virgin Islands and Australia! In addition to competing against their peers, students had the unique opportunity to interact with wind industry leaders and learn about the rapidly growing industry.
Hosting the National Challenge at WINDPOWER was a phenomenal and inspiring experience for our teams. A team’s coach summed it up saying “My students are not the most athletic or popular, but for the last month they were the school's super stars. It was amazing seeing how science and engineering were suddenly ‘cool.’”
And beyond the event itself, results of the KidWind Challenge reverberated through schools and planted long-term impacts and inspiration in students’ minds. “The entire KidWind experience has been pivotal for some of my students. They are thinking of wind energy as a career choice after having done this.”
KidWind works with the Department of Energy (DOE) to plan and execute the Collegiate Wind Competition (CWC), a wind competition for college students. This year, the National KidWind Challenge was co-located with the CWC. Younger students were able to interact with college teams during the event, which gave them a glimpse into some of the college programs and careers they could pursue in the future. Likewise, college students were impressed by the knowledge and creativity of their younger peers. In the future, we hope to leverage this connection by hosting KidWind Challenge Events at more colleges that have CWC teams.
